In His final days on earth, Jesus gave something called the Great Commission, a command for all Christ-followers to spread God’s teachings to all the people of the world. For many, this is a daunting expectation, but God’s Great Commission also comes with comfort, as He says he’ll be there for all who step out on faith and “go.” Will you trust God and go as He asks you?

Work through the following Scriptures and questions on your own, and get together with your running partner, Life Group, or friends and family to talk through what you are learning!

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. What’s a favorite place you’ve traveled or a place you’ve dreamt of going?
  2. Have you ever been on a GO! Team (or mission trip) or helped send others? If so, what led to your decision? How did the experience impact you? If you’ve never gone or helped send, have you ever considered doing so?
  3. Read Matthew 28:18-20. The Great Commission includes a command, but it also includes a comforting note, in which Jesus assures Christ-followers that He will be there for us as we go. Can you think of a time you got a prompting from God, but fear held you back? How does knowing God has promised to be there for you help you respond to His plans?
  4. Have you wrestled with the Great Commission to “go”? Have you ever prayed to God and said, “What does this mean for me, Lord? I’m open. I’m apprehensive, but I’m open. If we’re all supposed to be involved in going, where and how do you want me to go?” If so, what answers did you receive?
  5. We learned this week that five out of six non-Christians have no opportunity to hear the message about Jesus, and of the 400,000 cross-cultural “missionaries,” only 3% go to unreached people groups. How do you think God calls Christ-followers to respond to such statistics?
  6. For many, one of the main barriers keeping them from following the Great Commission is statements like, “I’m too _______ to go,” where they fill in the blank with words like “old,” “busy,” “poor,” “afraid,” or “new to faith.” Have you experienced a barrier like this? If so, how did you fill in the blank, and how do you believe God can help you overcome such false perceptions.
  7. Read Romans 10:13-14. Knowing both that there are people all over the world, including refugees in your own backyard, waiting to hear of the love of Christ and that God expects us each to play a role in sharing His teachings with every people group, what steps will you take to respond to God’s commission this week? Pray and ask God for clear next steps and to comfort all of your fears.

KEY SCRIPTURES

Matthew 28:18-20 — Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Romans 10:13-14 — For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?
