Leadership Residency

AsUR leaders lead in churches of messy, imperfect people rising up out of the culture to become the Body of Christ where everyone can come as they are. We seek to mobilize AsUR leaders to start AsUR churches, campuses, and networks that will take people from lost to leading.

What is the Residency?

The AsUR Leader Residency is an intensive self-funded year long program at Gateway Church in Austin, TX. As a Gateway Resident, you will be given the opportunity to learn first hand from the creator of the AsUR movement John Burke, as well as other senior staff members. You will participate in the day-to-day activities of church staff, and have access to senior-level meetings and networking opportunities. Each resident will spend a year apprenticing to a campus pastor at Gateway, as well as learning through hands-on action and reflection tools such as Cultivate and a teaching lab.

We will equip and train in the fundamentals of multiplication and discipleship based on 2 Timothy 2:2 (And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others) and give you a holistic understanding of what it takes to lead a church, campus, or network that reaches people far from God and takes them from lost to leading. This includes gaining an understanding of every ministry within the church. Imagine learning programming principles on how to create a worship gathering that engages a person far from God as well as long-time Christ-followers, as well as understanding how to create budgets for your church or campus and knowing how to cast a compelling vision that attracts other leaders to join you on mission.

Who is this for?

The AsUR Leader Residency is geared towards leaders who are both practitioners and thought leaders and want to plant a church, start or lead a campus, or start a multiplying network of life groups. The residency is created for people who dream big dreams for God and want to have a kingdom impact.

This is a full-time program. The hours are consistent with a typical ministry schedule.

How long does the residency last?

The residency is one full year in length, August to August.

What is the cost to complete the program?

There is no cost to complete the program, but you are required to raise support to cover the cost of your living expenses – rent, food, and other necessities. We will work with you to determine the amount you will need to raise. Gateway will cover the costs of all materials for the program including the cost of Cultivate.

Why do I need to raise my own support?

Whether working as a campus pastor or a church planter, it’s important to be able to cast a vision in which people are willing to financially invest. This is a great first step towards developing this skill and learning how to get buy-in to your ministry and vision.

I have no experiencing raising support. Will you help me?

We will provide tools, resources and accountability to guide and encourage you through the process.

When will I find out if I am accepted into the residency program?

Applicants will hear back no later than April regarding acceptance. We want to ensure that you have ample time to prepare for your move, as well as raise support.

When does the residency program begin?

Residents should be able to move to Austin in early to mid August, as the program begins the third week of August.

Can you help me find a place to live?

Gateway has a limited number of families that have opened their homes to single residents and married residents without children. If an opportunity exists, we will match you up. Otherwise, we can give guidance on areas of the city that might provide affordable housing.

Can I get seminary credit for the program?

Yes, seminary credit is available through Bethel Seminary for completing the Cultivate educational component of the residency. Bethel has agreed to award 9 elective credits towards the completion of your master’s degree, and you will be responsible for tuition costs separately.

How many residents will be accepted?

We have a limited number of spots available, so we recommend applying early.
